digital hi-tech avant-gardists

''I don't give a shit about the sixties.I'm just
obsessed with technology and i want to exploit it
and use it to the best of my ability.
I've always been a gadget-freak.I've got a real fetish
for well-designed things.Food processors,anything.
Cheap machines that help improve people's lives
are f***ing brilliant.''

call a wave
your wildlife
Music is a form of art that sometimes serves a higher purpose.Think of a mysterious puppet master that's pulling the strings from somewhere far in the cosmos and the result being a human recoding something that is almost divine.I've always thought of music having divine origins. It has the power to soothe even the wildest beast living on this planet which is our humble selves. If people listened closely to the music with a pure heart the world could be a place of balance. This is a piece by Anton Chekhov which is one of the most wonderful things i have ever read and makes me think of the beauty that surrounds us when we are not to blind to see.In Oreanda they sat on a bench not far from the church, looked down on the sea,and were silent.Yalta was barely visible through the morning mist, white clouds stood motionless on the mountaintops. The leaves of the trees did not stir, cicadas called and the monotonous, dull noise of the sea, coming from below, spoke of the peace,of the eternal sleep that awaits us.So it had sounded below, when neither Yalta nor Oreanda were there,so it sounded now and would go on sounding with the same indifference when we are no longer here. And in this constancy,in this utter indifference to the life and death of each of us,there perhaps lies hidden the pledge of our eternal salvation, the unceasing movement of life on earth,of unceasing perfection.Sitting beside the young woman, who looked so beautiful in the dawn, appeased and enchanted by the view of this magical decor-sea mountains -clouds,the open sky,Gurov reflected that ,essentially,if you thought of it,everything was beautiful in this world, everything except for what ourselves think and do when we forget the highest goals of being and our human dignity.

New Med....but what in Jose's name is it?

New Med.
Another pointless category thought up by journalists?
Actually no.It's a term thought up by the record-happy
types at Manchester's Eastern Bloc record shop.
For new Med think a new Balearic.Mediterranean music
aimed not at the dancefloor but the head.
Think the film soundtracks of E.Morricone or Fila Brazillia's
folsky D'n'B.Think deep house played next to the modern
classical of Penguin Cafe Orchestra.Think whole diaspora
of music that's linked by nothing more complex than it's
sheer sonic beauty.
"It's a return to the old Balearic vibe. Not the idea of playing
whatever you want ,but just play wonderful, spiritual, warm music.
It's a reaction against the hands in the air mentality."
Says Eastern Bloc's Mark Jackson.
It was Mark who came up with the name, pissing about in the shop
with fellow Bloc-head Richard 'Moonboots' Blithell.
'We've all been collecting this music for years,"says Mark,"and we
just wanted something to help people know what we are talking about.
We thought of 'Nuevo Flamenco',but we ended up with new Med ,u know
new Mediterranean,new meditation."
He's the first person who admit that it's not much to hang a musical
movement around ,seeing as he can only really name 4 people who are
into it: him,Richard, chill out DJ Phil Mison and Hugh Bryder(Scope).
The starting point was the awesome chill out selection of veteran
Jose Padilla, who has been playing everything from Leftfield to classical
for most of the last decades. But the Ibiza conjured up by a second
generation Balearic DJ like Phil Mison is the club folklore of eternal sunsets
and blissed out afternoons on the beach.
New Med might sound like trainspotty clique-let's face it,
it is a trainspotty clique-but when ambient has travelled so far down the
noisy road away from it's original chill ethic towards a the decidedly
unsettling ''illbient'',thank Christ there are still people interested in
seeking out music that massages your temples rather than pummels them.
Music has soul rather than intellectual pretensions.
Something you can enjoy at face value without having your preconceptions
challenged.So what's new Med?It's rather nice,isn't it?

double journey
September has kicked in for good and to be honest the memories of my summer madness are starting to fade away.Quite a natural process i guess in order to let things move forwards.Listening to this track by Double today made think it's quite a shame it never got posted here.Proper balearic music to help you get rid off those early autumn blues.Tuesday, September 8, 2009
ride the rhythms on the midnight train to Romford

Hyde and Smith were members of Underworld
on its first incarnation as a rock band,
which went on a hiatus after 1990. In 1992,
the two grouped with Darren Emerson to record
electronic music. In the beginning stages
they decided to release their material both as Underworld
and as Lemon Interupt, in order to check public reaction
to their new artistic direction.
The new Underworld first released Eclipse/Big Mouth
double A side on Juniors Boy's Own as Lemon Interupt.
Balearic -minded,effortlessly melodic house that had Dj's
clawing past each other at the counter for copies.

southern sunsets mix
As i have stated numerous times on this page the best thing about running a blog is meeting new people and sharing the mutual love for music.David is a great bloke that runs the really eclectic and great looking site called NONCOLLECTIVE which specializes in delivering some great left-field mixes by some of the the usual suspects in the librarians society.I guess most for you must be vivid supporters by now and if you are not you should check it out.So as ia said in the beginning David is one of those rare but really wonderful encounters.Since we love his site for quite some time now i was more than happy to put down a mix for him.I cant really put a tag for the mix.I guess you can call it ''world'' music for summer nights. The mix is available at the NONCOLLECTIVE from tonight on so give it a go.

my teenage heroes
This goes way back around 1993 when me and my friend Theodore ,who now is a university teacher somewhere in the U.K,discovered this band of young lads from suburban Athens called Stereo Nova.Somewhere between the soundscapes of early Mr Fingers and the euphoria of the melodic trance that was booming back in those days,Stereo Nova added some amazing lyrics sung to everyone's surprise in Greek.Rather a risky attempt by a greek band that experimented with electonic music where everyone else was into grunge brit pop.Their first two records are in my humble opinion two classic electronic music albums that remain till now historical. These two records were the soundtrack to my puberty and still remain close to my heart after so many years.I can vividly remember watching the Athenian skyline from Theodore's terrace while listening to this tune.Sounding a lot like Phil Mison's Lula(one of my favourite balearic tracks ever)altough recorded many years earlier, this magical instrumental by Greece's unsung heroes,is a magical journey in to the moist and sweaty summer nights of our teenage dreams. This is a small tribute to all the friends that are not with me anymore and to the innocence we lost somewhere along the way.
