Back in the days where the most common thing you could find on people was acid, the shrine for all the tripped astronauts believers was the Hacienda. The most common example on how the new wave movement transformed into the most groundbraking movement the world had seen and this happening mainly because of the genious brain of a guy called Tony Wilson,a band called New Order and a bunch of Dj's like Mick Pickering or Greg Wilson to name two.A fine example of what progession means is the fact that depression kings Joy Division transformed into Rave Zealots.Consider the fact that after the death of Ian Curtis all the other lads were listening to warehouse classics and italo. When recording Blue Monday,New Order were playing heavily an italo track called Dirty Talk by Klein M.B.O.You can clearly hear the influence on the best selling single of all time.Dirty Talk was one of the first exotic tracks to be played at the Hacienda and one of the biggest hits ever.Hacienda was the European equivalent of the Paradise Garage,The Warehouse and the Music Box.It transformed a mainly gay black drug culture to a universal thing. The fuel to set this fire on was acid and it made white boys fall in love with what was the music of the gay black gay elite of Chicago and New York.Records championed by legend Larry Levan like Don't Make Me Wait by Nyc Peech Boys became huge at the Hacienda. And suddenly another strange thing.A new wave of british bands started getting rotation on the turntables together with their American cousins.Voodoo Ray by A Guy Called Gerard was a fine example of how the UK scene could make the heads turn in awe across the the other side of the Atlantic.Albion had already established a fond affection for black music since the 60's.The Northern Soul Allnighters originally based on the north of England were a primitive form of what would come next. The allnighters started changing their early 60's harcore soul repertoire into more 70's funk infused music at the beginning of the 80's.Uk bands started experimenting with Jazz Funk with groups like Level 42 championing the scene. What the Hacienda did was not an exact copy of what the afroamericans had proceeded creating but blend UK's long lastingclub tradition with all these new elements. This blend was a bomb consisted of Chicago house,New Wave,Disco,Jazz funk,Detroit Techno,Italo and last but not least acid. The name of the place where the bomb exploded is Manchester and after the explosion nothing remained the same.Hacienda was the cornerstone of a new era.The magnificent miracle of the black culture infiltrating the white world.Like with so many other cultures before acid house like Rockabilly,Mod,Northern Soul the confrontation of two worlds proved a miracle that produced civilisation. It's the same old story again again and again.Africa spreading it's warmth around the world reaching the industrial capitals of the white world and there something like magic happens.Detroit,Manchester and the list goes on.
The influence of the Hacienda on today's dance scene is enormous.Hacienda was the vehicle to take things on another level.Tony Wilson and his mates were visionaires that realised that everything has to evolve otherwise it dies. From the prototype robotic house drumming of Joy Division to New Order making a record in Ibiza the distance isn't that big as you may think.Below there is a list with some of the records that were big at the time and i consider classics of an era.One of them is Sub Sub with Space Face, one of my favourite dance tracks ever. One trivial piece of information is that the group known as Sub Sub is the group everyone knows as The Doves.Funny??Anyway there is a great live version of the Doves playing the best record they ever made at Glastonbury.

So this is the end for our mixtape project. It turned out to be a rather soulful compilation for evening coctails.I guess i call this succesful for a summer tape. The last post for the tape is in my opinion the most important one. It's a track so good that i ve been listening to it on repeat all day and im'not even tired yet.The track is called Concorde Nighflight. It comes from Hungarian guitar wizard Gabor Szabo's LP Nighflight. It's without a doubt the best track on the album. The orchestration is epic and dramatic with heavy strings and the the guitar is firing notes like a machine gun.Gabor Szabo is an astonishing guitar player with loads of good albums like Spellbinder, High Contrast with the hit Breezing feat Bobby Womack,Dreams,Faces and the list goes on.Tomorrow i will have ready the sleeve for the tape so everyone can go on vacation happy.Enjoy.

In Flight by George Benson is a classic in it's own right.George Benson's guitar playing is unique and his characteristic scat vocals that made him famous are stunning. You can hear this in full effect on his epic cover version of War's classic The World Is A Ghetto.Nature Boy,another cover on this album is probably one his best songs ever(according to two or three friends of mine it's their favourite song ever).Again the drums are provided by all star session Harvey Mason. It's an Lp even your mum knows but it's a classic fro everyone to own.If you don't already rush to your local record shop and buy a copy.

Latin Superman's Ray Barreto album Can You Feel it is a masterpiece of latin influenced disco.More Jazz Funk leanings than disco to be honest but it works out pretty well. For late afternoon summer sessions the track of the same name is a winner with a bensonesque guitar solo.Just a little something to get your feet start moving.

This Lp takes 10 out of 10!With tracks like Dominoes,Wind Parade and You and the Music it holds a really special place among 70's Jazz funk Records. The extensive use of strings adds a really cosmopolitan feeling to it.Donald Byrd's trumpet takes you to a on a trip to sunny beaches together with the one you love. The amazing drumming is provided by Mr Harvey Mason. You And The Music with it's killer female and vocal interlude describes the story of two lovers exchanging words of infatuation. When you speak a symphony begins!!

Speaking of acid jazz i thought of another gem that was a favourite in my summer mixtapes.United Future Organisation were a band who got associated with the whole acid jazz boom but had little to do with any other band of the genre.Their music was a unique blend of old style jazz(even beepop) with electronic elements and samples through a rather ethnical approach sometimes.Their first album is a collection of great collaborations from Galliano to Monday Michiru and Jon Hendricks.Every track has a story to tell and the vibe is like being in a smoky jazz club around 1958.Anyway enough said. This is ''I 'll bet you thought I'd never find you'' featuring Jon Hendricks on vocals and is a cover of an original by Les Mcccan.

I can remember vividely that every time this particular bassline started playing from an old cassete player after sunset everyone was in a state of euphoria.Omar's There's Nothing Like this had that certain feeling that epitomised a whole era.The whole Acid Jazz movement seems quite overworn now but it gave the world some strong tunes that still give you the shivers now.Maybe acid jazz was more of a revival of everything we love from the seventies and less a music movement.Whatever the case it was the sound of many summers.I used to spend my holidays with some real acid jazz affacionados, many years ago when i was still into psychedelic sixties music, and this whole new thing called acid jazz broaded my horizons in music.A really fond memory and a really beloved song.

"Stay" is a song written by David Bowie for the 1976 album
Station to Station. In July 1976 it was released as a single
by RCA in the US. The drummer on this song was Dennis Davis
who also appeared on Stevie Wonder's ''HOTTER THAN JULY"
album."Station to Station" was the transition into a more
experimental phase of Bowie's career,
and I strongly recommend it.

"Prone" was to be released as Ned Doheny's 3rd album in the United States in 1978. However, Ned lost his deal with CBS and thus this album was never released in the States. In spite of his commercial failure in the States, Ned kept his popularity in Japan and then he performed live in December 1978, which made this unreleased 3rd album released only in Japan in 1979. The original LP version was released with different jacket artworks and also should be noted that the album opening track "To Prove My Love" was instrumental version.

round the corner
Street corner symphony was the music vehicle of Glenn Gunner and Pete Z.Their 1998 album No Running,No Bombing,No Petting was a tour de force of their skills as new disco zealots.Mostly based on live orchestration and less on electronics the music has a natural and original feeling found only on 70's recordings.Tracks like The Fifth Symphony and Symphonic Tonic make your jaw drop on the floor.A masterpiece of house music that still sounds fresh compared to anything the new disco scene has to offer. The next lines are from thanks section of the sleeve of the cd.

Extra Terrestrial Music Source
The term ?Italo-Disco? refers to disco music produced in Italy by Italian composers and artists in the early 80's.
Traditionally, the classic Italo sound is made purely by keyboards. The rhythm section is totally electronic. The voice and vocoder are used mainly as an instrument in order to complete the melody - the robot-like disco sounds were considered extremely innovative for their time.
Italo is all about those over-arrangements, accents ? the melancholic style of the ROLAND JX-8 synths, and sounds created by the Minimoog, Oberheim, Emulator II,
all have their place in the history of the music.
At the beginning of the 80's the Italian sound was played in the American gay clubs.
Venues like the Warehouse in Chicago let the music boom.
Italo played a major role in the development of house, with house pioneers like Frankie Knuckles, Mickey Oliver and Ron Hardy playing much of the Italo sound.
Many "old school" Chicago tapes contain plenty of Italo, but it stayed an underground phenomenon in America. However, it gained enormous popularity for a couple of years in Eastern Europe, Russia and Asia, especially in Japan.

beach boy
Even band like the Beach Boys was infected with the disco virus around 1979.Their infection was almost lethal though.Their effort was Here Comes The Night and was a rather mediocre approach.Classic Beach Boys vocal harmonies over disco beat and bleeps..Horror.Harcore fans felt deeply dissapointed about the turn in the group's music. The person to blame was keybord player Bruce Johnston who produced the album LA(Light Album) and the the 12'' Here Comes The Night. This guy put out a record in 1977 called Pipeline.Maybe he decided to keep all the money to himself as this track is a killer disco stomper with amazing production(sounds like it's produced by a nu disco outfit) and a phazed pecussion break in the middle that leaves you speechles.Nice try Bruce..

I could write a whole essay about the work of Mr Fingers aka Fingers Inc. aka Larry Heard.Well the purpose of this blog is not to tell you things we guess you are already familiar with or be a free mp3 site. Its more of our way to express feelings day by day using music as the media.A universal language everyone can understand. If we are getting across that's another thing.I hope something is going on here and our effort touches a soul or two out there. So not a lot to say about Mr larry Heard. One of the pivotal figures in house music he is still producing top quality house music through various labels and mostly on Track Mode records. His track Dance Of Planet X is from his album Alien On Black Market Records.I have been listening to it almost everyday the last week.Especially at night time under the stars.A classic from 1996.

Charles Bullen formed the duo Friendly Rifles with Charles Hayward,
who later became the legendary art-punk band This Heat.
After this band split in 1982 he made an album under the name

Like other British post-punk contemporaries (Slits, Pop Group)
Bullen immerses himself deep in zoned dub territory on
much of this album
the thick reggae haze with hypnotic and winding lock grooves
are surely the albums finest moments (see “Good Side”)

I was introduced to this song by a friend years ago.It still blows my mind away. Its from Santana's album Oneness: Silver Dreams, Golden Reality from 1979.The guitar work is seminal, the lyrics are a carnival of joy and the title of the song itself is a celebration of life.Get on the parade.

SIGN O' THE TIMES
In France a skinny man
Died of a big disease with a little name
By chance his girlfriend came across a needle
And soon she did the same
At home there are seventeen-year-old boys
And their idea of fun
Is being in a gang called The Disciples
High on crack, totin' a machine gun
Time, time
Hurricane Annie ripped the ceiling of a church
And killed everyone inside
U turn on the telly and every other story
Is tellin' U somebody died
Sister killed her baby cuz she could afford 2 feed it
And we're sending people 2 the moon
In September my cousin tried reefer 4 the very first time
Now he's doing horse, it's June
Times, times
It's silly, no?
When a rocket ship explodes
And everybody still wants 2 fly
Some say a man ain't happy
Unless a man truly dies
Oh why
Time, time
Baby make a speech, Star Wars fly
Neighbors just shine it on
But if a night falls and a bomb falls
Will anybody see the dawn
Time, times
It's silly, no?
When a rocket blows
And everybody still wants 2 fly
Some say a man ain't happy, truly
Until a man truly dies
Oh why, oh why, Sign O the Times
Time, time
Sign O the Times mess with your mind
Hurry before it's 2 late
Let's fall in love, get married, have a baby
We'll call him Nate... if it's a boy
Time, time
"The song tackles AIDS, natural disasters, drugs,
the Challenger explosion,
and just a general feeling of impending doom."
Prince cemented his domination of the 80's by dropping the
REVOLUTION and writing the most inspired lyrics of his career
resulting in his magnum opus.

SPACE URANUS
This is a true masterpiece! Jimmy Cauty of the KLF drifts off into dark and unknown territory on this continous mix/journey in a manner not as accessible (maybe) as the "Chill Out" album of KLF but actually even more magical and mysterious.
The marvels of the universe unravels before our very ears and it´s a serious, deep and at times almost ominous trip. Simple but so deep that one almost levitates.
One of the tracks of this album called URANUS.
So switch the lights off,
kick back, relax
and be transported away with.

MR ASHRA
Some Ashra stuff in the museum
Manuel Göttsching Tokyo Wax Museum (2008)
Modest, quiet, bad with self-promotion and with answering the phone, composer and multi instrumentalist (he's one of the best on guitar :-)) Manuel Göttsching is instead content to stay at home meditating on his next project by painting his Berlin's flat windows, but yet, he is prominently exhibited as a wax model in Asia's largest Wax Museum, in the Tokyo Tower:, showcasing him as a world class musician.
This legendary guitarist of the 70's funky Germany has profoundly influenced today's electronic music, and his compositions are performed by contemporary ensembles like Zeitkratzer, by classical pianists as well as jazz musicians.
Beginning as Ash Ra Tempel, later Ashra, then solo as Manuel Göttsching, creating and originating the German music scene together at a time when groups like Tangerine Dream, Agitation Free, Kraftwerk and Can, to name a few, put music made in Germany on the map.
While there has always been and still is an Anglo-American musical influence, this new musical movement did not try to reproduce what they heard, but to make something new!
Since at the time the German language was not popular in rock music, most performers wrote lyrics in English, and as Ash Ra Tempel refused to play that commercial game, they more or less decided not to have lyrics at all!
Manuel Göttsching enjoyed a creative environment, surrounded by painters, musicians, film makers and fashion designers. He composed and performed live music for various fashion shows by Claudia Skoda and customized runway show music for fashion designer Wolfgang JOOP!
If you still cannot put your finger on the person that I am presenting here, one of the most celebrated pieces he recorded is the 1981 E2-E4, which has also been remixed as "Sueno Latino".
“Ain’t no time for Tears”, sees the classic Ashra line-up go all funky and latin. A steel drum intro
builds to a powerful groove, before the band slowly fades in – a great beginning to a composition which has a lot in common with Santana’s early recordings and again is highlighted by a playful and melodically flowing Göttsching guitar solo.
On both compositions, Claussell has apparently left the tapes intact and merely added some beats and an organ – his organic approach is a welcome diversion from the egoistic and unrecognisable remixes of most techno acts. BY TOBIAS FISCHER .
